Just because you're losing, doesn't mean you're lost

Kristine has officially reached the end of her rope staying at the hospital now for a full week. Her muscles and joints are sore from being in bed for hours and days on end. She has become very depressed with her situation and sitting around inactive and dwelling on it just exacerbates her mood. The doctor was going to give her an antidepressant but has decided to wait until she can talk to the staff psychologist at the rehab center. This is, of course, preferable so that she can start on a comprehensive plan rather than applying the current ad hoc treatment tactics where every problem has a solution in pill form.

The good news is that Kristine has been cleared for transfer today. The cardiologist, Dr. Miles, is mildly concerned about her irregular heart rate. Concerned enough that under normal circumstances she probably would have left here with a pacemaker. Her heart pauses for seconds at a time -- anywhere from 4-8 seconds. An eight second or longer pause is enough to make her pass out. However, neither Miles nor Staddon feels that it is urgent to have the surgery when there are more urgent issues to contend with, like getting Kristine moving, walking and back in good mental health. Fortunately she will be under observation at the center for at least a couple of weeks.

Kristine has started to talk on the phone as long as she doesn't have to talk about herself too much. She slips into a better mood when she is engaged in conversation about other people's drama. She is still not up for visitors, but hopefully that will change once she has started rehab.

At this point we are just trying to keep her upbeat, distracted from the pain and moving forward toward the future. Stealing from the lyrics by the band Coldplay, "just because I'm losing, doesn't mean I'm lost, doesn't mean I'll stop." I am confident that Kristine will find her way and push ahead. She just needs more time to gather the strength and believe in herself again.

  1. Kristine,
Erica called me yesterday ecstatic to say that you had moved your leg! The victory is felt all across the United States! did you have any idea you were such a celebrity? I just have to remind you that the whole exercise thing is really not all it's cracked up to be - LOL!

You go girl, kick cancers ass and once you are running again (although, again, I want to point out it's not THAT much fun! :) ) it won't stand a chance of catching you. AND look how much these men love you - running all over the city looking for your favorite milkshake? THAT is pretty special! Make 'em work for you - you deserve it! Good luck with your transfer to rehab and keep up the awesome fight!!!

    BTTW - Ashley

  3. Hi babe!
I have a friend who is overcoming nerve damage and paralysis in his arm by looking in the mirror and using his conscious brain to move the limb. His doctors say this is a great way to keep the muscles trained and is the first step toward getting full mobility back. You'll be back to walking Ruffus very soon... just in time for the Puke Berries!
    Love you!

  6. Good evening Kristine. I'm just checking in to see how things are going today. We just got back from a hockey game in Flint, we have a tournament there this weekend. Justin's team was supposed to get their asses handed to them, but tied 1-1. This other team is ranked up in the top of the state, so a tie was like a win for him. I wish that you could see him, he is so intense.....I wonder where he gets that from, his mom or dad??? Anyway, we have two more games tomorrow and hopefull a semi-final on Sunday. Brooke just goes along for the ride and hangs out with the other siblings, she talks of playing hockey and I keep ignoring her....do you think that will work for me? Well, I know this is all trivial compared to your world, but thought I would share some details from my life as a year-round hockey mom. And yes, sometimes I resort to drinking in the parking lot just liven things up a little, hey....didn't we use to do that? Ha Ha......Have a milkshake for me and good luck at your next game of cards. Hang tough...Lots of love, Ann

  7. Hi Kristine and Ryan,

I am a long time friend of Erica's. We became instant friends when she transfered to our school in 5th grade. I am so grateful for the strength you have given her. Thank you for supporting her! :) You know I could tell you lots of stories about "Eirhead" (hope she does not beat me for putting her nickname out here). I learned lots of stuff from her. She was my IDOL and so experienced if you know what I mean! :) Anyway, I won't give any specifics right now she might read this note. I live in Iowa, work at an ice cream manufacturer (not Ben&Jerry's) do you have Blue Bunny out there? :) I also have 2 girls and a husband who keep me very busy! I wanted to let you know that we are all cheering for you. Also, I can't wait to read you and Erica's book and of course I will want a personalized signed copy from two of the strongest women who have touched my life! :)

    Take care,
    Steph Engle

  12. Hey Krissy,
Haven't been blogging since I am not on the net at home. Am moving in with my boy toy. So crazy what has been happening to you. Please let readers know when is a good time for guests, I'd like to get a hotel room and visit when you feel up to it, if that seems like a good thing for you. When you are in Portland, Maine to visit Ryan's sissy you call me and we'll catch up. I miss you both so much and I love you and am so grateful that you are mobile and came through the surgery ok. Ryan, I love you, too. You are courageous rock star.
