Next Stop: Rehab

Not a whole lot has changed from yesterday. Kristine is out of the ICU and in a standard care room in the hospital. The neurosurgical team is happy with her progress and is recommending that she move to a rehabilitation facility in the next couple of days. They believe that she is in good stable condition and should begin her rehabilitation as soon as possible.

The rehab treatment will be comprised of two phases, in-patient and home care. Kristine will stay at the facility for the in-patient portion until they feel that she has reached her maximum rehabilitation point. This could take weeks or months depending on her progress. In the second phase, social workers will come to our house to establish a suitable long term environment based on Kristine’s status when she leaves in-patient treatment. I plan to do a tour of the two likely Penn Hospital facilities on Tuesday with one of Kristine’s parents. Both centers are within blocks of our house, which makes the transition that much easier. There is a chance that we will choose to do part of the rehab in Houston with Kristine’s parents. This will really depend on the speed and degree of her recovery. A long and less successful recovery will necessitate this route. We will just need to cross that bridge when we come to it.

Aside from the obvious physical therapy services that the rehab center will provide there are also a psychological services. This is becoming increasingly important for Kristine as she continues to question the purpose of fighting on and her fortitude and desire to do so.

More to come tomorrow.

  1. Hello Ryan, I just wanted to let you know that I sent you an email to your email address. I didn't know if it would show up in your "spam" folder or not, but just wanted to give you a heads up so you were on the lookout for it. It will show up from "shwoopies@aol.com". Looking forward to hearing from you. Take care Ryan, and lots and lots of love to Kristine. XOXO- Erica & Tim

  2. Dear Kristine-
I'm praying for you and your family! My Dad had a brain tumor that was enourmous in size a couple of years ago, he made a full recovery against the odds they put forth. I just wanted to give you something positive to think about. Our bodies are amazing machines, the brain when injured needs time to repair and sometimes it takes a few weeks for that to happen, I am very hopeful for you. When you are up for visitors I'd love to come and see you! Cherie

  7. Bless your heart, Kristine Becker. You are a precious gal.

Many thanks to Ryan for the updates. A lot of us – me included - have never met you, Ryan, but now you know how many lives Kristine has touched over the years based on all the well wishes on this blog. Thanks for being such an outstanding caretaker.

Hearing the name “Kristine Becker” brings back many happy childhood memories for me. Remember riding our bikes together for many days in a row all the way to MacArthur for driver’s education class with Mr. Emerick? For the actual driving practice you told me you were color blind and wanted me to speak up if it looked like you might run a red light. Oy vey! A group of us girls had lots of fun toilet papering high school sports’ players houses . . . all in the name of school spirit. (Nothing like minor vandalism to show someone you care. Ha Ha.) Bleacher Creaturing during basketball season was always a good time. You were the cheerleader who could do multiple hand springs (is that what it’s called?) in a row. Truly amazing. And here’s a stupid little memory which you probably don’t recall . . . in middle school you came over to my house once after school to hang out and stay for dinner. At that time you apparently were a very picky eater because you did not like and would not eat anything my mom had prepared for dinner. My mom was a tad annoyed and wanted to speak her mind about this, but I wouldn’t let her. Being 12 years old meant not upsetting one of the cool kids in my class. That would have been social suicide. So, my mom kept her mouth shut.

To you and yours – stay strong and peaceful and comfortable.

    Warm Regards,
    Cathy Fleschner

  9. I am wishing you both the very best. My thoughts are with you. If there is anything I can do, I am an email away and if Kristine needs a pick-me-up, remind her of the time I got stuck to the floor at Avalon and she had to pry me loose...that should bring a smile to her face.
